Islamic Manners of Eating
Written by Farzana Yeasmin
Spread the mat, before you dine,
Wash your hands—fresh and fine.
Say Bismillah and pray from heart,
Eat together, then Blessings will start.
Eat with your right hand, that's right,
Use three fingers, small and light.
Sit and eat, don’t stand or lie,
Don’t lean back, just sit by.
Eat from one side of your plate
Not the middle — that’s not great.
Don't eat food that's too hot,
Let it cool, blow it not!
Criticizing food? That's not right.
Disliked food? Let it slide.
Pray for the cook and for the server,
May their efforts be blessed forever.
Do you want to start healthy?
Divide your belly into three parts, surely.
One for food and one for water,
Leave one empty, don't eat more.
Pick up dropped food, clean, and eat,
Wasting or spoiling is no good treat.
Keep away screens while you dine,
Respect your meal — you will shine!
Think of others at a collective feast,
Start from the right, to say the least.
Lick your finger and lick your plate,
Show respect — don't hesitate.
Wash your hands after your meal,
Rinse your mouth, it's a good deal.
Drink your water in three sips,
Thank Allah with your lips.
