Submitted strawberry plant photo.

Assalamu Alaikum,

The 5th of June is World Environment Day, a beautiful reminder that caring for the earth is part of our responsibility as Muslims.

Many of us have already started gardening in our yard, beside our windows or even balcony. Alhamdulillah, our family has already started planting variety of greens, berries, and flowers in our backyard and we are excited to see them flourish. May Allah make us among those who nurture His creation and leave behind a legacy of goodness for future generations. 🌿

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“If a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, a person, or an animal eats from it, it is regarded as a charity (sadaqah) for him.” - (Sahih Al-Bukhari 2320, Sahih Muslim 1553)

This beautiful hadith teaches us that even a small act of planting can help us gaining rewards continuously. Every leaf, every flowers, every fruits, and the shade this tree provides will become a source of our reward. Subhan Allah! A few minutes of effort today could become years of ongoing reward.

Moreover, we are encouraged to see the changes in the phases of trees, how rainfall helps plants emerge from the seeds, how plant grows and bears fruits, and how a fruit turns from raw to ripe. This way, the believers can reflect and learn.

Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says in the Quran:

“And He is the One Who sends down rain from the sky, causing all kinds of plants to grow, producing green stalks from which We bring forth clustered grain. And from palm trees come clusters of dates hanging within reach. There are also gardens of grapevines, olives, and pomegranates, similar in shape but dissimilar in taste. Look at their fruit as it yields and ripens! Indeed, in these are signs for people who believe.” - Surah Al-An'am, Ayat 99 (6:99)

Brothers and Sisters, let’s try to plant at least one plant! whether indoors or outdoors; today, tomorrow, or sometime this summer. Planting gives us this serene feeling and calms our nerves. It also helps us nourish our surroundings and air that helps us breathe. Subhan Allah! Let us make this small commitment for the better future of us and for the Sadaqah we may receive In sha Allah.

P. S: This is a picture of one of my strawberry 🍓plants. We have encouraged our youth sisters to contribute to this commitment in Saskatoon Chapter and are eager to see what they plant In sha Allah.
